Rip Current Hop Wine

We’re proud to announce the release of the biggest hoppy beer we’ve made to date, Rip Current Hop Wine.  We brewed this beer to celebrate the 20th anniversary of a San Diego legendary beer bar, O’brien’s Pub.  The owner challenged us to make a huge hoppy beer that is bigger then any San Diego-made beer they have had on tap.  After working on the recipe for some time, we decided to make a 15.7% quadruple IPA that looked and tasted like a San Diego-style IPA but was MUCH bigger.   This is quite the challenge since its hard to get the yeast to ferment out such a huge beer thus allowing it to have a dry finish.  This is why so many high alcohol beers tend to finish sweet.

We made batches of several hoppy beers to build up enough yeast and then decided to go for it.  While it was a nervous few weeks, we’re very proud of the resulting beer.  Our “Hop Wine” (using a name to parallel barleywine or wheat wine) is blonde in color, features huge complex hop aroma and flavor yet finishes dry and biting.  The Hop Wine is 15.7% ABV with over 180 IBUs of bitterness.   However, the beer is really all about being very drinkable despite it huge size.  We managed to keep down the hot alcohol flavors as much as possible, so you can enjoy sip after sip of this monstrosity.  We are selling it at our tasting room for the next month or so and you can expect to see it at our events during San Diego Beer Week with later release to other accounts.

Please enjoy it responsibly!

Rip Current Brewing/Sublime coming to North Park!

In case you haven’t heard, our latest big project is to open a tasting room in North Park!  We’re very excited to be joining the thriving beer and food culture of North Park and offer a big variety of our beers to those not in North County.  Since we opened, the most frequent comment we’ve heard from customers is that we’re just too far away for them to visit often, so we’re opening a place closer to San Diego to help address that issue.  The following picture shows our new location at 4101 30th Street (across the street from Ritual Tavern).  We leased from corner space plus the unit behind it off of polk.  You can look forward to some major changes to the exterior including a new paint color and large roll-up doors on both sides of the corner entrance.   This will allow natural breezes to cool the front bar area most of the year.

We started construction a few weeks ago and you can see from the picture below that we’ve made some good progress.  The cold room walls were installed this week and you can see the base for the bar counter that will wrap around the 30 ft wide cold room.  We plan to have 20 taps pouring including some guest beers.  On the side of the cold room will be a large merchandiser offering bottled beer, wine, ciders and meads from many great breweries around the country.

The spiral ducting in the left front is being installed, so we can offer air conditioning during the hot summer months.   In the back right corner of the picture, you can see the future walls to the full kitchen that will be run by the great folks from Sublime (Alehouse and Tavern).  We look forward to being able to serve you a number of compelling food items including pizza, burgers, salads and some more specialty food items to pair well with your Rip Current beers.

Your probably wondering when we’ll be open.  If so, we are too!   When you do construction its always tough to provide a good estimate for a completion date.  We’re hoping to be open well before the end of the year.   If you keep an eye on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/RipCurrentBrewing) we’ll post frequent updates on our progress.
